Art
I love art! I usually paint in acrylics, and my paintings are often based on places I've visited, or people I know, with nature and symbols drawn from Cambridge, India, and Suriname. Some of my favorite artists are: Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keefe, Dali, Escher, Remedios Varo, Barkley Hendricks, Amrita Shergil, Iris Scott, Maria Qamar, and the Guerrilla Girls. Its a long list! Occasionally I experiment with trying their styles in my own work, and I've put some images of my work below.
The series above is called "Dreams, Imagine, Love", inspired by New York street and graffiti art (2016). Recently I made a graffiti-inspired portrait of Prof. Barbara Grosz for her 70th birthday (2018) and a a portrait of my daughter's best friend (2022). I've also done a series of self-portraits (1994, 2008, 2011, 2013) some of which you can see below. My daughter Jahnavi Zondervan is also an accomplished painter and activist. You can see some of her box murals in Central Square in Cambridge, and she occasionally exhibits her work at Small World Coffee in Princeton.
